The Yearling, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings - First Edition, 1st Printing - 1938
First edition, first printing of 'The Yearling' by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings in beautiful condition.
Octavo (6 1/4 x 5 5/8 inches; 209 x 143 mm.). [viii], 428 pp. With 34 woodcut chapter-headings (including illustration on title-page). Publisher's cream linen over boards, front cover decorated and titled in green, spine lettered in green.
Meets all criteria for first printing: The first printing has the letter "A" and Scribner's seal on the copyright page. Original $2.50 price printed on front dust jacket flap. The first issue dust jacket has a four paragraph publisher's description of the story on the back panel and a tout on the bottom stating that the book is a Book-of-the-Month Club Selection. There are no media reviews on the back panel.
Note: the Book-of-the-Month statement does NOT mean that the book or jacket is a book club edition. Rather it is nothing more than a tout by the publisher to advertise in effect that the Book-of-the-Month Club planned to make a book club edition at the time the first edition was published.
Hardcover with original first state dust jacket. Jacket has some chipping and edge wear near spine and jacket flaps and small closed tear on rear. Not price clipped. Some rubbing visible on front jacket cover. Binding strong and square. Plates show no damage. Interior is clean with no markings, inscriptions, or plates. Overall near fine condition. A rare find in this condition.
The Yearling was the best selling novel the year it was released and would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize. Translated into over twenty languages, The Yearling was also adapted into a 1946 film starring Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman, who would both receive Academy Award nominations for their performances.
